Lessons to Last a Lifetime

The YMCA is the nation’s favorite swim instructor, and we have been teaching people how to swim for 100 years. We believe that swimming is an important life skill that children should have the opportunity to learn early in life.

Research shows that formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children ages 1-4 years. Studies connect many additional benefits including improved motor skills, cognitive development, strength, self-esteem and social confidence.

With nationally-certified and highly-trained instructors, our lessons focus on essential, life-saving skills and techniques while helping encourage swimming as an excellent tool for lifelong wellness.

WE OFFER SWIM LESSONS AT THE FOLLOWING Y’S:

Lessons For All Ages

We offer a wide range of options for the whole family with classes beginning at 6 months of age, all the way up to adults. Swimmers are divided into groups by ability and our trained, certified instructors work to develop skills and confidence in and out of the water. Our lessons are available year-round with daytime, evening and weekend classes at multiple locations and financial assistance is available.

Swim Testing

At the Y, one of our top priorities is helping youth practice safety around water. As of October 3, 2016, anyone age 16 and under using YMCA pools will be required to take a swim test. Swim testing is a way to increase our level of vigilance with water safety. Our swim tests and swim lessons also give children a sense of achievement as they move towards the green swim level.

OUR SWIM TEST CRITERIA TO RECEIVE A GREEN NECKLACE:
1. Jump into water that is over the head and return to the surface.
2. Swim at least 12.5 yards with a strong forward stroke.
3. Tread water for at least 20 seconds.
4. Swim to a ladder or side of the pool and exit the pool.
